An English town's floral tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, has backfired after people took to the internet, describing the memorial as "awful" and "scary".

The tribute, which is currently being displayed in Chesterfield town centre as part of their well-dressing celebrations, has gone viral on social media with people expressing their horror at the unique creation.

Chesterfield Borough Council has said that the tribute will remain on display until Saturday, and hope the design will attract more people to the town.

This Diana 'tribute' in Chesterfield town centre is something else.

Hundreds of people have taken to social media, commenting that the floral arrangements look more like scarecrow Worzel Gummidge or singer Tina Turner than the late Princess of Wales.

Others questioned whether the florist's aim was to create a portrait of what Diana would look like in zombie form.

One social media user wrote: "I appreciate all the work that goes into the dressing of a well but this is just awful."

Another commented: "I live here and, let me tell you, I can feel its eyes on me, even now in my house."

A spokesman for Chesterfield Borough Council said: "The well-dressing is produced by 14 volunteers using the ancient Derbyshire art of well dressing, which involves creating designs from flower petals and other natural materials.
