One such organisation that the Countess visited today was Bosence Farm Community, a charity which provides residential treatment to help those suffering from drugs and alcohol addiction.
Sophie arrived at the centre alongside Edward Bolitho, who is the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall in addition to President of Bosence Farm.
According to their website, Bosence Farm aims for a society where: “every person suffering from substance misuse can receive high-quality treatment and support to meet their needs, and help them become fulfilled and productive members of their community.”
On her visit, the Countess opened the new 8-bed Young People and Families unit, before touring the existing services of the 26-year-old Centre.
The new facility is the only one of its kind in the country, and centres around a ground-breaking programme enabling young people to make positive change and realise their dreams and potential.
To mark her visit, Sophie unveiled a plaque, something her husband did in 2010 when the Earl of Wessex made a visit to open the then-new detox and stabilisation centre at Bosence Farm.
After unveiling the plaque, Her Royal Highness toured the charity’s inpatient detoxification and stabilisation unit, and the residential rehab, spending time meeting staff, volunteers, service-users, and others.

One of the centre’s volunteers, Lee, presented the Countess with a bouquet of flowers and said: “I was a bit nervous but really pleased to meet Her Royal Highness at Bosence.”
Kate Cook, Chief Executive of Hayle-based charity, Bosence Farm said: “It was such a huge honour for our charity to have had a visit from a member of the Royal Family. We are truly delighted to have her support. HRH is a long standing charitable supporter, particularly in championing initiatives relating to young people, and her visit will help to highlight our work and let people know about the great things we achieve at Bosence.
“We enjoyed welcoming Her Royal Highness here, and we made sure she had the opportunity to meet the staff and volunteers who work so hard to ensure our residents have the best treatment and care possible.”
Also hosting royalty on Monday was Krowji Creative Hub, located in West Park, Redruth.
Krowji (which literally translates to ‘shed’ from Cornish), is the county’s largest creative hub and provides studios, workspaces, offices, a cafe, and a wide range of other facilities for creative businesses.
The hub, which is located in the Old Grammar School buildings in Redruth, is currently home to a variety of creative businesses including painters, jewellers, furniture makers, web designers, theatre companies, musicians and many others.
West Cornwall Women’s Aid (WCWA) was the final destination for the Countess of Wessex on Monday afternoon.
WCWA was established 30 years ago in 1987 by a group of female volunteers and helps provide positive interventions for women and children experiencing domestic abuse.
On the occasion of the charity’s 30th anniversary, the Countess met those who work to help victims of domestic abuse and observed the important work that the organisation undertakes on a daily basis.
Police receive a domestic abuse related call every 30 seconds, and it is estimated that one in four women will be affected by domestic abuse at some point in their lifetime.
On Tuesday, during the second leg of her visit to Cornwall, the Countess will conduct a further three engagements.
While in Cornwall, Sophie’s husband, the Earl of Wessex, is currently in Germany in his role as the Royal Honorary Colonel of The Royal Wessex Yeomanry. He is in the country to visit the Regiment during their annual training in Sennelager.
